The architecture of Amsterdam is very unique. Amsterdam is known for its canal houses; thin, rectanular houses, each with a different style.
Inside each house is very narrow and small compared to American houses. To conserve space, because it is at such a premium, spiral staircases are used to get upstairs. This creates a problem when you move into a new house and have a king size bed. The only way to get the bed upstairs is through the front window. In the picture below, notice the wooden beams that stick out from the top of the roof. A rope is put through a metal hook and then the object is hauled up to the appropriate floor.
